Photographs from the Holodomor
There are very few photos that document the famine that ravaged Ukraine in 1932-33 because Soviet authorities, who officially and forcefully denied there was a Famine, branded any attempt to document it as anti-Soviet propaganda, and as such, a criminal offense. Given the importance of the rare photos that do exist, HREC has produced a directory of what can be called forbidden photographs – photos from the Holodomor era that were taken undetected and managed to evade confiscation and destruction.
